Installation at Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ

A few blog posts ago, we talked about being the official turfgrass providers to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Baseball is only one of the sports that we provide turfgrass for. Last month, we installed bentgrass at Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale. By all appearances, our project began on June 25, which is the point which we have had big and small rolls delivered and throughout that time, we’ve installed three greens per week. This has been ongoing and will culminate in the finished product, on July 31. However, this project actually commenced in October of 2017. At that time, Troon North contacted West Coast Turf – known for our expertise in Arizona sod – and contracted us to custom-grow A1/A4 bent grass on our farm in Escondido, CA. At that point, seed was planted in October.
Overall, a total of 130,000 square feet will have been delivered and installed by the end of July. Our big rolls are four feet wide and thirty feet long and our small rolls are sixteen inches wide by five feet in length. Troon North is a hallmark of the Scottsdale desert golf scene, boasting two beautiful 18-hole courses that stretch through landcapes such as natural ravines and foothills, with giant granite boulders scattered across the Sonoran Desert landscape.
When you need an expert in Arizona sod, installing turf grass at your golf course, baseball field, or football field – contact West Coast Turf. https://www.westcoastturf.com/

West Coast Turf – Official Turfgrass Providers to the Arizona Diamondbacks

“If you build it, they will come.” – Field of Dreams
The iconic line from Field of Dreams is true: if you build it, they will come. But you have to build it well, and with the right materials. In February, we installed Platinum T.E. at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Platinum T.E. is a new variety of natural turfgrass sod, the same type found on the Atlanta Braves, Houston Astros, and Florida Marlin’sfields. We started out small last season and installed it in the infield and arch, and so thoroughly impressed the Diamondback’s head groundskeeper, Grant Trenbeath that we made the transition ahead of the 2018 season. What makes the difference with this new sod is that it has a shorter dormancy period than the bermudagrass, which cuts out the necessity of a ryegrass overseed. For the first time, there won’t be a transition period from rye to bermuda at Chase Field.
John Marman, our Vice President of Sales and Marketing, says of the new sod, “There are always new advancements in technology in the industry, and that includes turfgrass. This Platinum will do quite well in the low light conditions Chase Field struggles with in some areas. It also ‘stripes’ much better than bermuda to create crisp mowing patterns.” Another bonus is that it is an environmentally-friendly grass that only requires one-third of the nitrogen fertility that bermudagrass uses, in addition to less water.
At West Coast Turf we pride ourselves on being experts in growing and installing sod in professional baseball facilities. In addition to the Arizona Diamondbacks – for whom we have been the official turfgrass providers since their inaugural season in 1998, we also provide turfgrass for the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, as well as many MLB spring training facilities.
We are a full-service sod, hydroseeding, and stolonization company with offices and farms throughout Arizona and California and grow more than 30 varieties of natural turfgrass. In addition to baseball fields, we also have been the grower and installer for eight Super Bowls spanning from California to Florida, several NFL and MLS teams.

Seashore Paspaulum and Spring Transition for Your Warm Season Lawn

Arizona Diamondbacks

As many of you know BOBSod has been the turf of choice for the Diamondbacks since its conception in 1998, but this year we made a change. The Diamondbacks grounds crew experimented with a few different varieties over the last year and they decided to make the change to the environmentally friendly Platinum TE seashore paspalum. While the BOBSod is still performing at an extremely high level, a shift was made to go with a grass that could be installed without overseed in early March. For those not familiar with paspalum one of its best attributes is its shorter dormancy period. Paspalum can handle temperatures that drop into the 40’s at night before losing color while bermudagrasses will start to lose color in the 50’s. This often leads to a 3+ weeks longer season in the fall and can often green up a few weeks earlier in the spring.

Having the roof over Chase Field provides a lot shade during the spring transition and can really extend the life of the ryegrass. As you probably have learned from your bermudagrass lawns over the years shade will take out your grass over time. Since the ryegrass can live longer inside the stadium, it makes for a longer transition. With this in mind the groundskeeper decided to make the choice to use a non overseeded grass and avoid any transition.

Overseeding Paspalum/ College Football Week #5/ Tip of the Week

The weather is finally starting to cooperate, and we are in prime overseeding season from now till early November.  It appears that the night time temperatures will start to drop into the high 60’s by mid week and the day time temperatures will be in the high 80’s.  It has been a long hot summer (as they all are!), but this one seemed particularly brutal to me.  Read the rest of this entry »

What Am I Thinking?!/Overseeding UR Lawn/College Football Week 3

As the weekend draws closer my nerves are starting to rise and it’s not because it is time almost time to overseed your lawn (but we’ll discuss that!) or that another Division II school is coming to Ann Arbor to embarrass my Wolverines (we’ll talk about that, too!).  This weekend I will be running in my first “Ultra Marathon” and the goal is to complete 46.2 miles (75K).   Read the rest of this entry »
