“If you build it, they will come.” – Field of Dreams
The iconic line from Field of Dreams is true: if you build it, they will come. But you have to build it well, and with the right materials. In February, we installed Platinum T.E. at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Platinum T.E. is a new variety of natural turfgrass sod, the same type found on the Atlanta Braves, Houston Astros, and Florida Marlin’sfields. We started out small last season and installed it in the infield and arch, and so thoroughly impressed the Diamondback’s head groundskeeper, Grant Trenbeath that we made the transition ahead of the 2018 season. What makes the difference with this new sod is that it has a shorter dormancy period than the bermudagrass, which cuts out the necessity of a ryegrass overseed. For the first time, there won’t be a transition period from rye to bermuda at Chase Field.
John Marman, our Vice President of Sales and Marketing, says of the new sod, “There are always new advancements in technology in the industry, and that includes turfgrass. This Platinum will do quite well in the low light conditions Chase Field struggles with in some areas. It also ‘stripes’ much better than bermuda to create crisp mowing patterns.” Another bonus is that it is an environmentally-friendly grass that only requires one-third of the nitrogen fertility that bermudagrass uses, in addition to less water.
At West Coast Turf we pride ourselves on being experts in growing and installing sod in professional baseball facilities. In addition to the Arizona Diamondbacks – for whom we have been the official turfgrass providers since their inaugural season in 1998, we also provide turfgrass for the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, as well as many MLB spring training facilities.
We are a full-service sod, hydroseeding, and stolonization company with offices and farms throughout Arizona and California and grow more than 30 varieties of natural turfgrass. In addition to baseball fields, we also have been the grower and installer for eight Super Bowls spanning from California to Florida, several NFL and MLS teams.
